The following is a statement by the US Alliance for Democratic Iran:
The US Alliance for Democratic Iran welcomes the Iraq Study Group's (ISG) recognition of the destructive and destabilizing role the Iranian regime is playing in Iraq. The USADI, however, considers ISG's recommendation for United States' direct engagement with Tehran reckless and contrary to the best interest of American and Iranian people.
Iran's ruling mullahs are no doubt further emboldened to know that their meddling in Iraq and perusing "hegemonistic revolutionary" ambitions in the region are paying huge political dividends. Any suggestion for engagement by Washington at this juncture is seen by Tehran as another sign of desperation and weakness.
The ISG's proposal for direct engagement with Tehran, as far its stated goal is concerned, is Dead on Arrival. Iran's strategists have placed the "Iraq prize" at the core of Tehran's doctrine of "survival by expansion," which was stepped up following Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's presidency. Therefore, Iran would not submit to any security and political order in Iraq which would establish a real national reconciliation government. For such political arrangement would effectively put an end to Tehran's goal of turning Iraq into a client state through its religious and political proxies in Iraq's leadership.
Furthermore, the ISG's recommendation is in contradiction with the costly lessons of the September 11: Negotiating and making deals with terrorist regimes never works, it only emboldens them. Since 1980s, successive Democrat and Republican U.S. Administrations have named Iran "the most active state sponsor of terrorism."
Since 1979, there has been no shortage of Washington direct talks with the Iranian regime. They all failed since Iran lacks the ideological capacity and political will to be a party to any meaningful negotiations. Iran's "behavioral change" would come about only when a democratic regime replaces the ruling theocracy.
Messrs James Baker and Lee Hamilton, the co-chairs of ISG, have justified their recommendation for direct talks with Iran's ruling terror-sponsoring tyranny by saying "We think it is worth a try," since "You don't have much to lose here... and why not take some chance here in involving these countries?"
This is regrettable. "Taking a chance" in our approach toward the theocratic regime bent on acquiring nuclear weapons, and turning our Iran-policymaking into an exercise in trial-and- error, is simply playing a dangerous policy 'Russian Roulette.'
