he recently pushed for more, not fewer, troops -- may turn off the moderate, independent-minded voters who've long formed the bedrock of his primary support. Still, some members of McCain's inner circle are convinced the stance could actually work to McCain's advantage -- reminding independents of the maverick they fell in love with in 2000.

INTERNATIONAL: "Russian Roulette" (p. 42). Correspondent Owen Matthews and Senior Editor Michael Hirsh report that the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, a critic of the Kremlin and former Russian spy, has the world wondering how dangerous Moscow has become. Some U.S. and European officials now liken President Vladimir Putin's Russia to a fascist state -- a place where bribes and protection rackets dominate and contract killings are as common as buyouts on Wall Street. And enemies of the Kremlin and its many business interests have been turning up suspiciously dead lately, with the Litvinenko poisoning being the most brazen attack yet. Despite the failure to find a culprit in the Litvinenko case, intelligence assessments sent to the White House by last weekend indicated that most theories pointed back to Moscow.

BUSINESS: "Get Ready to Rumble" (p. 46). Associate Editor Ramin Setoodeh reports that Barbie is facing a mid-life crisis. She has new opponents: the Bratz dolls-Yasmin, Cloe, Sasha and Jade-midriff-baring girls who flaunt their "passion for fashion" with sequins, fur and heavy eye shadow not seen this side of Studio 54. Since their debut in 2001, Bratz have been stealing shelf space right out from under Barbie's heels. "Bratz are hipper, more fashionable dolls that girls can relate to," says Isaac Larian, CEO of Bratz maker MGA Entertainment. More fashionable than Barbie in her Bob Mackie gowns?! No wonder she's ready to rumble with the panethnic Bratz. And this being Barbie, the rumble will be held in court.

ROBERT J. SAMUELSON: "Why the Buck is on the Edge" (p. 49). "Who cares if the euro is now worth $1.33 instead of the $1.28 it was on Nov. 20 -- a 4 percent loss for the dollar? Well, we all should," writes Contributing Editor Robert J. Samuelson. "The dollar's mysterious movements pose one of the thorniest economic questions of our time: can the world economy thrive without the massive stimulus of ever-increasing U.S. trade deficits? It's no secret that Asia, Europe and Latin America have feasted on the U.S. trade gap. In 2006 the deficit will reach about $800 billion-bringing the cumulative total since 1996 to $4.4 trillion. But as the U.S. economy slows, so will Americans' ravenous appetite for imports. Likewise, the dropping dollar (down 11 percent against the euro this year) will make U.S. exports more competitive on global markets. Big exporting countries may suffer. They need stronger domestic economic growth -- or their economies may languish."

HEALTH FOR LIFE: "What's Next in Medicine" (p. 51). In the latest installment of the "Health For Life" series, Newsweek teams up with experts from Harvard Medical School to look at what's next in medical treatments and tools. The report includes:

"Peering Into the Future" (p. 53). Senior Writer Claudia Kalb reports that three years after scientists announced they had sequenced the human genome, new knowledge about how our genes affect our health is transforming the way diseases are understood, diagnosed, treated -- and even predicted. And now, as genetic screening gets cheaper and faster, researchers are hunting down the biological underpinnings of more-complex disorders that involve multiple genes -- big, rampaging illnesses that strike millions of Americans every year such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, heart disease and depression. If the scientists are right, genetic tests for some of these diseases could be available by 2010.

"A Six-Foot Lab Rat" (p. 69). Correspondent Anne Underwood reports on new treatments and medicines for the deadliest type of brain tumor-glioblastoma, which is resistant to both chemotherapy and radiation. For the first time in decades, scientists are now daring to hope that a series of experimental new therapies could one day meaningfully extend patients' lives -- not by weeks, but by months and even years.

"Can We Slow Aging?" (p. 80). David Sinclair, M.D., and Anthony L. Komaroff, M.D., both professors at Harvard Medical School, write that some recent research suggests that aging as we know it may not be inevitable. Scientists have discovered that resveratrol -- a molecule produced in plants (such as red-wine grapes)-has been found to enhance the vitality and extend the life of every species its has been fed to, from yeast to fish. Mice that were fed the substance were found to have better protection against heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's, as well as being leaner and having enhanced aerobic activity, despite being fed a high-calorie, high-fat diet.

"Vitamin D in the Spotlight" (p. 85). Meir J. Stampfer, M.D., DR. P. H., writes that for many years, vitamin D was boring -- even to doctors. It was considered good for bones and not much else. However, scientists now think vitamin D may affect everything from diabetes to cancer. They're also finding many people don't have enough of it.

MOVIES: "Living the Dream" (p. 96). Senior Writer Sean Smith looks at why almost everyone who has seen "Dreamgirls" agrees it will make Jennifer Hudson a star-it has already landed her a recording contract and major Oscar buzz. He also talks to Hudson about the challenges of being a size 12 in the size-2 world of showbiz. "Why should I feel like the minority when the majority of America is a size 12?" she says. "Plus, a lot of singers don't sound the same when they lose weight ... I have a little singer's pouch, and that's where the voice comes from, so you're all just going to have to get used to my jelly ... Hey, somebody has to represent the big girls. Why not me?"

THE TIP SHEET: "Taxes 2006: Win Some, Lose Some" (p. 101). The Tip Sheet presents Contributing Editor Jane Bryant Quinn's annual, end-of-the-year tax guide with some new tax-saving nuggets.
