Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 10-9 in ten innings at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
The Patriots broke a 9-9 tie in the bottom of the tenth inning. First baseman Jim Burt reached on a single and advanced to second on an error. Burt moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Travis Anderson and scored on an error off the bat of second baseman George Sandel.
The Patriots tied up the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Anderson walked and center fielder Elliott Ayala singled to put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Henri Stanley then hit an RBI single to plate Anderson, who later scored on left fielder Larry Barnes' RBI groundout to tie the game.
The Ducks put up three runs in the top of the ninth inning to wipe out a Patriots come back in the previous inning. The inning was highlighted by first baseman Henry Rodriguez's two-run double and left fielder Kevin Haverbusch drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for a 9-7 lead.
Somerset rallied from a 6-1 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Catcher Jim Buckley and Sandel each singled. Buckley was replaced by pinch runner Pat Boran and both runners scored on a three-run home run by designated hitter Henri Stanley. Barnes and third baseman Kevin Nicholson reached on singles and scored on right fielder Ryan Radmanovich's three-run homer (24).
The Ducks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Second baseman Ray Navarrete singled, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by catcher Greg Connors. Connors would score on a double by Hernandez and third baseman Erick Almonte followed with an RBI single.
The Patriots got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Stanley singled, moved to third on an error, and scored on an RBI groundout by Barnes to cut the lead to 3-1.
Long Island extended the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Connors singled, went to third on Hernandez's single, and later scored on a throwing error to give the Ducks a 4-1 advantage.
The Ducks added a run in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-1 lead. Connors singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Almonte's RBI single. Long Island scored again in the top of the eighth inning on Haverbusch's solo home run (7) to left field for a 6-1 lead.
Patriots reliever Hector Almonte (4-1) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on two hits and three strikeouts in two innings pitched. Ducks reliever Tim Cain (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on one hit in 0.1 innings pitched.
The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 1:35 pm game on Sunday afternoon against the Long Island Ducks. Sunday's game includes Seat Cushions for the first 1,500 fans and Baseball Bingo presented by Sunrise Senior Living. The game also includes Grandparents Day and Veterans of America Day.
