(PRWEB) June 6, 2006 -- If you thought «I'm going to Disneyworld» was a champion's gleeful refrain, you should have heard the yelp of joy from the winner of the recent Eye on Gambling online poker tournament who shouted, «I'm going to the World Series of Poker!»
In an exceptional effort to reward regular visitors to its website, EOG.com sponsored a $10,000 WSOP Seat Poker Tournament, which was open to anyone with a minimum of 100 posts in its forum or who had participated in its previous poker contests.
«We attract serious, knowledgeable gamblers,» observed EOG's honcho, Ken Weitzner, aka The Shrink. «The interaction among our posters is incredible. They trade insight, tips, friendly insults, all the by-play that you would expect from sharp gamblers who realize that players need to exchange info and work with each other to improve their chances of beating the house.
«I felt that offering them something that isn't available at other sites would be a tangible way of showing our appreciation for their efforts. The range of material that is covered in EOG posting forums is so vast, and so helpful to bettors -- whether they are novices or sharps -- I wanted to come up with a promotion that would acknowledge their efforts and get our posters excited.
«A seat in the WSOP $10,000-entry event was a prize that really motivated our audience. Even those who just watched the tournament online were caught up in the excitement.»
An entry fee of $500 drew 14 competitors for the Thursday, June 1 EOG event. Weitzner noted that the website will supply the additional $3,000 needed to obtain the seat.
It was an exciting competition which was won via a thrilling comeback by a poster known as The Seeker, with PPeter coming in second place.
Just before the climax, PPeter held a commanding chip lead of $16K to $3K. In what loomed as the final hand, Seeker was all in with a J 8 vs. PPeter's A 8. No help on the flop or turn for either, and when a J falls on the river, Seeker has new life.
Next hand, Seeker was still trailing in chips, $11K to $8K, with both players sitting on a 10 in the hole, and two more 10s turn up on the blind and flop. Seeker's other hole card, a Q, outkicks PPeter, and Seeker now has momentum.
On the final hand, the inevitable happens. Seeker needs a six to fill an inside straight. PPeter, with about $3K in chips left, is sitting with a winning pair of 8s and only the river is left. But when a six drops on the River, the resulting gut-shot straight is a dramatic climax to a hard-fought tournament.
Unlike the histrionic antics displayed by tournament winners on TV, Seeker was a gracious winner. PPeter took the loss in style with a simple, «Congrats Seeker. It came down to one card and you got me.»
The Seeker will be easily spotted during the WSOP. He will be wearing an EOG.com T-shirt. Before the competition got underway, he made a prophetic statement to the effect that if he won a seat, he would petition the suits he works for to give him a little extra time off, «even though I've already used my entire three weeks vacation this year.»
According to odds created by eog.com, The Seeker at 9-1 was the sixth choice. PPeter was 10-1.
During the pre-tournament period, some of the banter among posters reflected the good-natured camaraderie that is evident at the site. «Our posters are very competitive and zeroed in on winning,» said The Shrink «But there is much more going on than simply winning and losing. One-upmanship is an art form and nowhere on the Internet will you find funnier or more to-the-point observations than the ones in our forums.»
Our favorite comment came from Sound of Silence, who posted this pithy tidbit: «Odds of Sound of Silence scrounging up $500: 300-1; Odds of Sound of Silence scrounging up $500 then winning, 300,000-1.»
Another entrant, The General, noted he would get psyched for the tournament «by playing some Eye of the Tiger.»
One post, by Colhoopsman, was eloquent in its simplicity: «Shrink, can you lend me a nickel?»
The Shrink has not lost his magic touch in generating excitement for his website. Mercifully, he is not giving us an encore of some of the more objectionable hi jinks which made his previous site, the Rx, so notorious under his regime. Eog is benefiting from The Shrink's creativity, experience and better judgment.
During its short life time, EOG.com has quickly established itself as a leading sports gambling website. As a contributor, we look forward to watching it grow, and for its forums to continue to be known as preferred gathering spots for sports bettors of all levels.
