The Fearsome Foursome showed they really are to be feared at the poker table in Las Vegas this weekend after a pair of money finishes. Half of the Foursome was still alive during Day 3 after the initial 209-player field had been whittled down to 27.
Fearsome Foursome leader and BetHoldem Poker Room Manager Alex Jagodik finished an impressive 10th after grinding it out at the tables for three days. Jagodik just missed qualifying for the final table, but still pocketed $27,504 for his strong effort.
"I'm really pleased with how I played," Jagodik said after the tournament. "I really can't say there's anything that I shouldn't have done, or that I should have done to come out with a different outcome."
On his final hand of the tournament, Jagodik was all-in against John Spadavecchia and Bill Baxter. Baxter was in the lead preflop with pocket Kings versus Spadavecchia's pocket Jacks and Jagodik's Ace-Jack. Everything changed when another Jack appeared on the turn. The river offered no help to Jagodik or Baxter, but only Jagodik was eliminated as Baxter had enough chips to cover Spadavecchia's stack.
"I really thought when I caught the Ace-Jack that was my time to double-up and get back in the running heading into the final table," said Jagodik. "I was the short stack when we got down to 10 so I had to make a move if I was going to have a chance at the final table. The cards didn't fall my way, but I'm still very pleased with the outcome."
The Foursome's other WSOP veteran also played himself into the money. Brian Jensen added to his Fearsome Foursome winnings by placing 17th, which earned him a $19,646 payday. The Danish stockbroker is no stranger to winning at a WSOP Circuit main event, after placing second in Atlantic City back in February. Jensen's winnings on the WSOP Circuit now total over a quarter of a million dollars, all of which is profit since BetHoldem sponsored his buy-ins to the tournaments.
The other two members of the Foursome, Steve McGugan and Don Gatlin, may not have finished in the money but both played some excellent poker. Gatlin's tournament ended rather quickly on Day 1 after his pocket Kings ran into pocket Aces. McGugan, playing in his first-ever live tournament, survived Day 1 but ran into some cold cards on Day 2.
"Steve was really nervous at the start," said Jagodik. "But after awhile he calmed down and played some really good poker. Don ran into pocket aces early and unfortunately it ended his tournament quickly. It was tough luck, but Don's a good player and this won't be the last you'll hear about him."
The Fearsome Foursome's next action at the poker tables will come in June, at the WSOP Circuit main event at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. Jagodik and Jensen will both be fighting for another money finish, along with two new Fearsome Foursome qualifiers that will be chosen from qualifier tournaments at the end of this month. The first qualifier tournaments are scheduled to begin on May 22, while the Fearsome Foursome Finals when the next two members will be selected are slotted for May 28 and June 4.
