Planet Ace Gibraltar Ltd - PokerPages.com today launched the PokerPages.com Industry Index (PPII), a new indicator designed to help the poker industry and the public track the popularity of poker worldwide.
PokerPages.com Industry Index (PPII) data is based on over $1,000,000,000 in live tournament buy-ins and over 1,100,000 tournament entries since 2000, more than any other source in the world.
PokerPages.com's key Buy-In Index measures changes in total poker tournament buy-in dollars. By following the index, the public gains insight to changes in the size of the poker market, helping answer the question: Is poker growing?
The PokerPages.com Industry Index can be accessed directly at http://www.PokerPages.com/ppii .
The PPII also includes two other measures; the Entrants Index, which measures changes in the number of tournament entries, and the Average Buy-In Per Entry Index, which measures changes in the average buy-in stakes for tournaments. Together they provide additional insight into what is driving changes in the poker industry.
Poker has grown over 400% since 2001 --
The poker industry has enjoyed growth rates of 79% in 2004 and 69% in 2005, with total buy-ins reaching record levels of $223 Million and $376 Million respectively; for detailed information on historical buy-in go to http://www.pokerpages.com/ppii/buyin.php .
Drivers of the growth --
An in depth look at the data reveals, player entries are up 100% since 2001 at just over 300,000 entries in 2005 and growth has been accelerating every year from 2003 to 2005. Average Buy-in per entry levels have grown from $488 in 2001 to $1,237 in 2005 up 153%. Further trends contributing to poker's growth are: Chris Moneymaker's World Series of Poker win in 2003, increased production and distribution of poker related television, the penetration of online poker and the creation and expansion of the World Poker Tour and The World Series of Poker
Record months, poker soars to new heights --
The biggest month in poker ever recorded came in July of 2005, with the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event. Total buy-ins for the month were over $77 Million US, more than the entire year of poker in 2001.
July 2005 also holds the record for highest average buy-in per entry which was $2,285, only the second time that poker has seen an average over the $2,000 level.
The biggest month for player entries came in November 2005, recording over 35,750 entries, 2005 had the highest growth rate in entries over the past five years; matching the growth seen in 2004, which is a healthy indicator of continued growth in the industry.
Established in 2006 by PokerPages.com the PPII is the only index that is dedicated to the poker industry.
