The commercial use of peer-to-peertechnologies for distributing popular online games and other large digitalcontent, such as primetime television shows and major motion pictures, isexpected to be a hot topic at this week's Game Developer Conference 2006.New startup companies, such as Solid State Networks, are entering thecontent delivery market with new products while major technology leadersare acquiring established content delivery solutions providers, witnesslast week's acquisition of Kontiki by Verisign, all of which is putting abright light on the rapidly growing market segment.
Solid State Networks, a startup company dedicated to developinghigh-performance distributed content delivery solutions, is demonstratingat GDC (Booth 1443) its Solid State Distributed Delivery Network™ (DDN),the industry's first high-performance, commercial-class content deliverysolution based on the popular BitTorrent protocol.
Additionally, Tom Ketola, one of Solid State's co-founders and its VP ofEngineering, is speaking at the conference, outlining the gaming industry'sopportunity to leverage the popular BitTorrent protocol to improve end-userexperiences while saving bandwidth and hardware costs. Studies show thatBitTorrent protocol traffic may account for up to 30 percent of allinformation distributed over the Internet.
"Consumers are showing no let up in their use of the Internet as apreferred means to acquire digital content, whether music or large games,"said Ketola, the VP of Engineering at Solid State Networks. "The size ofdigital content objects is growing exponentially while the economics ofdelivering them over the Internet has hit a wall."
In his presentation Friday, March 24, from noon to 1 p.m. PST, Ketola willoutline for content producers and owners how they can utilize an optimizedpeer-to-peer or distributed architecture to solve the frequent problem ofoverloading Internet servers without the costly installation of additionalhardware or use of expensive, traditional content delivery networks(CDNs).
