World Poker Exchange, one of the world's fastest growing online poker sites, reports the number of Worldpx.com College Shootout participants more than doubled this year, occupying 37,000+ player seats. The online tournament drew strong interest from students at more than 800 U.S. higher education institutions across the country. A multi-level competition, it consisted of 131 individual events including preliminary contests, several semi-finals for players who successfully moved up the ranks, and a final heated round.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Cec Amado of the University of Connecticut emerged as the winner. His total cash/scholarship/prize winnings of $28,700 included a Mini Cooper automobile, a Cancun trip for two, a $1,500 scholarship, and $200 in his World Poker Exchange playing account.
Sara Sauvageau of Mayville State University captured second place, earning a prize package with a $10,650 value. Third place honors went to Angelo Panoutsos of Oakton Community College, taking home a prize package worth $6,100.
A player with just three years of experience, Amado explains that he approached his games with great confidence. "When I got to the semi finals I let everyone know that I was going to win," he says. "My confidence was at an all-time high and I felt that there was no one who was going to stop me. After destroying the semifinals, I went to the final table knowing that this tourney was mine to lose."
Amado sends his praise to World Poker Exchange, and encourages other players -- of all ages -- to try online gaming. "Playing online is the new wave of poker. It's easy, reliable, and safe," he underscores. "And you don't have to go far to play, you can play safely from your computer."
As a reflection of changing demographics in the sport, two of the six finalists were female. In addition to Sauvageau's second-place finish, Jen Villa of University of Miami came in fifth.
The university with the greatest amount of participation and players in prize-winning positions was Central Michigan University. The institution was represented by 65 players, 12 of who were "in the money" finishers.
"The college sector continues to be one of the fastest growing demographic segments of on-line poker, and once again we were delighted to see such extraordinary playing skills from this year's participants," says Haden Ware, managing director of World Poker Exchange. "The determination to achieve poker playing excellence among the college players of both sexes is truly impressive. For example, a young lady from Purdue University played 105 games in effort to make it into the final rounds. You just know we will be hearing more about players like her in the future."
