Who Needs Bond? Casino Royale � the True Story

Headlines over the past week have been filled with endless accounts of various casino-related crimes. Perhaps it is the lack of Hurricane [Insert Random Female name here] happenings � aside from Harrah's 1,400 Lake Charles casino employees who will most likely remain unemployed (see yesterday's article) � that has generated a certain boredom. This article is a short overview of a few of the casino-related crimes that took place in the past week.

South Africa � Fourteen robbers barged through the front door of the Emnotweni Casino in Lowveld, Nelspruit, on Tuesday. Some were masked and some also wielded AK-47s. Several shots were fired at the ceiling but, thankfully, none of the 55 hostages were hurt. The robbery took place only moments after the casino staff placed piles of cash from the tables into the money trolley. They left with a little over $150,000 and some of the casino guests' personal belongings. This was the casino's first robbery, and business has since resumed.

Oklahoma � Dustin Williams, a former dealer at the Cherokee Nation Casino, has been charged with theft. He allegedly stole a total sum of $3,500 from July to September this year.

South Dakota � It's been quite a hard week in Sioux Falls, where three casinos were robbed, one after another. The Mint Casino was the first victim, Saturday night. A white male entered the casino, his face covered, and demanded cash. He had no weapon. The Gold Nugget Casino was robbed on Sunday evening when a man with a knife demanded money. Another knife-wielding man robbed the Depot Casino on Monday. The police's official behavioral guidelines in such cases says to �give the money and be a good witness.� Perhaps the city, in which most robberies are casino-related, needs to adopt a new credo, that would involve upping security.

California � Not exactly a casino crime per se, but worth mentioning nonetheless. A bus carrying sixty people to the Casino Morongo caught on fire while driving east of Los Angeles. The casino was kind enough to send some shuttle buses to pick the passengers up. No one was hurt.

Israel � A hand grenade was thrown into Aaron Shaked's house on Saturday. Shaked is a multimillionaire and co-owner of online casino 888.com. He and his brother, Avi Shaked, who is currently trying to get into Israeli politics, made an estimated $90 million each when the company's shares floated in September this year. No one was harmed and police are investigating to see whether the grenade was related to Shaked's involvement in the casino industry.

Let's hope the next week will be better than the last, for our mental and physical wellness, and that of our wallets too.
